Usui Reiki & How to Become a Reiki Practitioner

What is Usui Reiki?

Usui Reiki is an ancient hands-on-healing system that was rediscovered by Dr Mikao Usui in Japan in the 1920s. Reiki is a Japanese word: Rei means life-force, and Ki means energy. Usui Reiki originates in Buddhism and is a technique that involves channelling universal life-force energy through the hands of the practitioner.

A Reiki practitioner’s hands are laid onto – or very close to – another person’s body for the healing to take place. A recommended set of 12 hand positions are placed on the head or on the front and back of the torso, and they usually coincide with the positioning of the chakras.

Life-Force Energy

The Usui system of natural healing is based on the ontological assumption that a life-force energy permeates all living things. The existence of universal life-force energy is acknowledged in many spiritual traditions around the world, and it is comparable to the Indian concept of Prana and Chinese Chi.

The Usui system of Reiki also integrates the ancient knowledge of the chakra system and it is believed that a Reiki practitioner’s ability to channel life force through their body and onto another person rebalances these chakras and allows healing to take place.

The Teachings

Reiki was originally taught as an oral tradition and its knowledge was passed down from teacher to student. Reiki is now taught through short weekend courses involving at least one attunement from teacher to student. The courses consist of First Degree, Second Degree, Third Degree and Master Level.

Usui Reiki is unique compared to other hands-on healing modalities in that the student must be attuned by a Reiki Master Teacher. The attunement, Reijui in Japan, is an initiation or empowerment into the Reiki energy and involves a set ritual that is engaged in by the teacher and student to activate the flow of energy. The attunement provides the spiritual connection, the Rei, and connects the student to universal life-force energy for a lifetime.

The Healing Process

After the attunement, practitioners usually undergo a healing process that may include physical, mental and emotional symptoms such as tiredness, upset stomach or emotional releases. During this healing process old wounds or blocked energies may be released or re-balanced. The archetype of the wounded healer suggests that those who embarks on a path of healing may experiences an increased number of physical, mental or emotions struggles throughout the process. These experiences can eventually be interpreted as meaningful because they serve the purpose of self-healing so that one can then continue to heal others.

What is Healing?

Healing is a transformative journey in which a transcendence of suffering and new meaning is found. It is a holistic process that encompasses the physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual components of one’s being and includes a movement towards wholeness.

Many studies have investigated the healing effects of Reiki and have reported a reduction in stress and a facilitation of the healing process in the patient and practitioner. Other reported healing effects include lower stress, reduction of pain, improved quality of sleep and clearing of negative emotional patterns and blocks.

Becoming a Reiki Practitioner

Are you interested to embark on a journey of self-healing and to heal others? I am offering a level 1 Reiki Course at Hold Space in Islington on 18th January, 10 - 6pm.

The Start of your Journey

Your First Degree Usui Reiki Training is the start of a journey into working with universal life force energy to heal yourself and others. An ability to channel Reiki brings greater peace, balance and connection in your life as it works to heal your physical, mental-emotional and spiritual body. It enables you to connect and listen to your intuition and bring awareness to our universal connection.

The First Degree Usui Reiki course includes a comprehensive overview of the traditional system and practice of Usui Reiki. There is an emphasis on the practical component so that by the end of the course you feel confident to give Reiki treatments to yourself and others as a first level Practitioner.

You will receive four attunements which allow you to access and begin channeling the universal life force energy. The attunement process from teacher to student is what makes Usui Reiki different from other types of energy healing.

It will take place on 18th January, 2020 from 10-6pm. Visit my page to learn specific details about what we will cover during the course.
