Whether you are being guided into meditation by a teacher or you are meditating by yourself - the effects within the brain and body are essentially the same and it comes down to personal preference. The thing that is most important (regarding receiving the effects of meditation) is meditating correctly. I think it is most effective to learn a meditation technique from an experienced teacher who can guide you.
